Vineyards of Condrieu

History : the vineyards of Condrieu were threatened to disappear many times in history. They survived the ravages of invasions, pillaging and the phylloxera vine disease at the beginning of the twentieth century. In more glorious times, however, they captured the attention of the Popes of Avignon, who wished to rebuild the vineyards for their own greedy pleasure. The mariners of Condrieu- a river port of old- popularized their wine as far as the Mediterranean and from three decades ago this prestigious appellation recovered its place among the great white wines.
Now, the vineyards encompass 140 hectares of Viognier planted on the slopes of the Rhône and produce 500,000 bottles of wine each year.

Soils and Climate : the appellation is located on the steep granite faces, which tower above the river and make mechanized cultivation impossible. The climate is continental with a moderate, dry and warm summer, and regular rain showers in other seasons.

The Domain Niero's Condrieu :four parcels of land, which cover a bit more than three hectares, produce the two cuvées of Robert Niero’s Condrieu.

  • Lieu-dit : Chéry 0,82 ha (on the most ancient and famous slope of the appellation)
  • Lieu-dit : La Roncharde and Côte Chatillon 1,92 ha (on the same slope)
  • Lieu-dit : Vergelas 0,18 ha
  • Lieu-dit : La Caille 0,27 ha
These plots are located in the district of Condrieu. The Viognier plants lay on the altered granite soil on a 25 to 40 degree grade, orientation south/south-east. This makes for warm early mornings and lower temperatures in the late evenings

Vineyards of Côte rôtie
History :these vineyards are some of the most ancient in France. The Romans developed them and later, a legend tells that in the Middle Ages Lord Maugron divided his property between his two daughters, one a brunette, and the other with blond hair, hence, the origin of the names of the wines Côte Rôtie “côte brune” and Côte Rôtie “côte blonde.”
The Côte Rôtie plants are of the Syrah variety, large and virile. Regulations allow a small percentage of Viognier (20% is permitted in the mix), which which gives it its mildness of tone.

Soils and Climate : the appellation is located on the steep granite faces, which tower above the river and make mechanized cultivation impossible. The climate is continental with a moderate, dry and warm summer, and regular rain showers in other seasons.

Domain Niero's Côte Rôtie : 2 parcells of land on almost 2 ha

  • Lieu-dit : La Viallière 0.61 ha on Ampuis district
  • Lieu-dit : Coteau de Bassenon 1.19 ha Semons distrinct

It is on a steep 50-degree grade in stony land, orientation south/south-east. The soil of coteau de Bassenon is very cloth to Condrieu’s one. The Syrah variety grape represents 95% of the mixture and the Viognier variety 5%.
