VINEYARD
THE VINEYARD OF CONDRIEU
History of CONDRIEU :
The vineyards of Condrieu were in danger of disappearing at various times in history. They survived the ravages
of invasions, pillaging and the phylloxera vine disease at the beginning of the twentieth century.
In more
glorious times, however, they captured the attention of the Popes of Avignon, who desired to rebuild the
vineyards for their own greedy pleasure. The mariners of Condrieu- a river port - popularized their wine to as
far as the Mediterranean. Three decades ago this prestigious appellation recovered its place among the great
white wines.
Now, the vineyards represent 140 hectares of Viognier planted on the slopes of the Rhône.
Soil and Climate :
The appellation is located on the steep granite slopes, which tower above the river making mechanized
cultivation impossible. The climate is continental with a moderate, dry and warm summer, and regular rain
showers in other seasons.
The Condrieu of Rémi and Robert Niero stems from four plots of land, which cover just over three hectares,
producing the two cuvees of Condrieu : the famous Coteau de Chéry, La Roncharde, Côte Chatillon, La Caille
and Vergelas.
These plots are located in the district of Condrieu. The Viognier vines on grow altered granite soil on 25 to 50
degree slopes, orientated south/south-east. This allows the soil to benefit from warm early mornings and
longer warm evening.

VINEYARD OF CÔTE-RÔTIE
History of Côte-Rôtie
Our vineyards are some of the oldest in France, first developed by The Romans developed them and Pline the
greater and celebrated them as "vin viennois" (wine from Vienne, the town near Condrieu).
A legend says that in the Middle Ages Lord Maugron divided his property between his two daughters, one a
brunette, and the other with blond hair, hence, the origin of the names of the wines Côte Rôtie "côte brune"
and Côte Rôtie "côte blonde."
The Côte Rôtie plants are of the Syrah variety, large and virile. Regulations allow a small percentage of Viognier
(20% is permitted in the assembly), which we can find in the côte blonde and which gives it its mildness of tone.
Soil and Climate :
The appellation is located on steep granite slopes called "chaillets", which tower above the river and make
mechanized cultivation impossible. The climate is continental with a moderate, dry and warm summer, and
regular rain showers in other seasons.
The Côte-Rôtie of Rémi et Robert NIERO stems from two plots of land of almost 2hectares : "La Vialliere" and
the Coteau de Bassenon"(plots the most south of the appellation).
